How It Works
We estimate energy per action (text, image and video) using indicative per-generation figures, scale them by your usage level and number of users, then multiply by your chosen time period. Emissions are calculated by applying the carbon intensity of your selected electricity grid mix to the total electricity used.
Why It Matters
How carbon intensity affects AI: the same workload can produce very different emissions depending on whether the supporting data centres are powered by renewables, nuclear or fossil fuels. Location matters because grids vary enormously by country and region, and the time of day changes the generation mix. Estimates vary because model efficiency, hardware and cooling all influence real energy use.

This calculator provides broad educational estimates only. Per-action energy figures are indicative averages and real values are rarely published per request. Grid intensities are simplified and change continuously.
